Smart Policies to Acheive Sustainability

An interesting set of resources from our friends across the pond in Europe, who just like us, are interested in making a difference that will satisfy both the customer (you) and Mother Nature (probably not you)! We want to keep the San Jose and the Silicon Valley as clean as we can and we truly believe buses and coaches are at the forefront of this movement!

But let’s let our European friends explain:

Governments all over the world are looking for sustainable ways to improve safety on their roads and environmental preservation while meeting all their citizens’ mobility needs with the least amount of time and money.

Buses and coaches are instrumental in effectively achieving these sustainable mobility objectives. Best practices and proven solutions, which are easy to implement, are at our fingertips.

Buses and coaches are an integral part of public transport and travel, and key elements in a sustainable transport system. The following calculations aim to give an outline of the potential benefits associated with doubling the use of buses and coaches in the EU, assuming that all new customers are attracted from private cars.

  • Properly informing oneself and others of the benefits of passenger transport by bus and coach;
  • Read through the various sections of the Smart Move website. You should also visit the IRU and Busworld websites or the websites of many Smart Move campaign Partners. Discover the best practices and implement them or make them known to those who can!
  • Using and promoting the use of buses and coaches;
  • Bus and coach-friendly legislation is needed to realise the full potential of buses and coaches. Authorities should establish and promote park-and-ride services and prominently display information on available services. Together with bus and coach operators, authorities might also develop marketing tools and incentive schemes to encourage greater use of buses and coaches.
  • Giving priority to buses and coaches;
  • Authorities should create special bus and coach lanes or give them priority at traffic lights in order to speed up services, as is already successfully the case in several cities. They should also ensure sufficient coach parking areas near city centres and tourist attractions with appropriate facilities and signage.
  • Fully integrating bus and coach services into collective public transport networks and ensuring fair fiscal treatment; Authorities should help promote and improve ticketing systems and interchange facilities to allow quick and convenient transfers between different modes of public transport. They should stimulate cooperation between the different transport modes. Authorities must also ensure equal fiscal treatment (excise duties, VAT, etc.) between all transport modes.
  • Providing funds for infrastructure improvements and better services; Authorities must invest in improved road infrastructure, including multimodal bus and coach terminals, to allow buses and coaches to optimise their services in conjunction with those of other transport modes for the benefit of the individual passenger and society as a whole. Authorities should support the contracting out of public transport to private bus and coach operators, as these often provide the most cost-efficient solutions.
  • Boosting public-private partnerships;
  • Bus operators are already reaping the benefits of their commitment to improve their fleets and services. Local authorities are also enjoying a return on their innovative approaches to transport strategy and planning. The net result is renewed consumer confidence exemplified by the modal shift to buses that is occurring in many countries, cities, towns and rural areas across the globe.

It’s been four years since the passing of Royal Coach Tours founder and visionary Joanne Smith Christian. Let’s relive a little bit of her remarkable legacy in this excerpt from her lovelyobituary:

Joanne is remembered as a creative visionary, and will truly be missed. Joanne’s gift of inspiration formed a legendary company, Royal Coach Tours. Today, Royal Coach Tours is one of the largest and highly regarded Charter Bus Transportation companies in Northern California.
In the year 1960 founder Joanne Smith took her winnings from a lucky keno ticket and purchased her very first 37 passenger motorcoach, which operated a commuter service from Fremont to Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale. After operating a successful commuter service for two years, she decided to transition into the charter bus business with the birth of Smith Charter Service. The dramatic growth of the Bay Area supported the expansion of Smith Charter Service. In late 1970 Joanne Smith changed the company name to Royal Coach Tours, a title that conveys to clients the type of service which her company offers, the first class Royal treatment.

In 1987, Joanne extended the royal touch to travel, starting Royalty Tours, which provided years of pre-planned adventures, catering primarily to the senior community. Today, Royal Coach Tours runs a fleet of 65+ vehicles. With strong integrity, Joanne built a quality company providing hundreds of jobs. She valued her employees and co-workers, and in return is looked at with pride and admiration. Her years of dedication, hard work, and passion have left a valuable imprint on anyone who has come into contact with Joanne and Royal Coach Tours. Joanne was known to many of the Royal Coach employees as “MOM”. Joanne’s legacy is passed down to her children, Dan Smith and Sandy Allen, who continue the tradition of perseverance and integrity, which is the foundation of Royal Coach Tours.

Royal Coach Tours is the proud transportation provider for the San Jose Saber Cats! Let’s wish them good luck tomorrow against the lowly Los Angeles Kiss (not that they’ll need it as they’ve been KILLING it this season!) In fact, the SaberCats recently swept the first-plate votes in the AFL Media Poll. Needless to say, we’re proud of our association with this franchise that is truly having a dream come true season! In case you missed that news, read about the details here:

The San Jose Sabercats (15-1) garnered all 16 first-place votes to remain in the top spot of the AFL Media Poll for the ninth consecutive week after defeating the Portland Thunder, 55-49, in overtime last weekend.

With 15 wins in 2015, the SaberCats have set a new franchise record for victories in a single-season. San Jose has a bye in Week 18, but can still clinch home field advantage if the LA KISS(4-11) defeat the No. 2-rankedArizona Rattlers (12-3) on Sunday. The Rattlers fell to theSpokane Shock (5-10) last week and will need to rebound at home to keep pace with their longtime rivals. Kickoff for the Week 18 matchup is set for 6:00 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPNEWS.

The No. 3-ranked Philadelphia Soul (13-3) lost to the fifth-rankedJacksonville Sharks (8-7), 67-74, in a back-and-forth thriller last weekend. The top seed in the American Conference will be on a bye this week, while Jacksonville tries to get back into the playoffs for the first time since 2013 when they host the Tampa Bay Storm (6-9) Saturday night on ESPNEWS. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.

The Orlando Predators clinched their 22nd playoff berth in 24 seasons last week with a 65-58 victory over the Cleveland Gladiators (7-9). The South Division leaders, who came in at No. 4 once again in the latest AFL Media Poll, have a bye in Week 18 but will return to action in a potentially division-deciding game next week against the Jacksonville Sharks.

The AFL Media Poll consists of voters from television, radio, and newspaper outlets who regularly cover the League in their respective markets, along with national personalities from ESPN and CBS Sports, who provide game and studio commentary about the Arena Football League.
